Coinstar Bitcoin Is Ending in Many States: Where to Buy Bitcoin With Cash Now

Updated October 26, 2026. America Bitcoin ATM is not affiliated with Coinme or Coinstar.

If you have been buying Bitcoin at a Coinstar kiosk in your grocery store, that option is going away in many states. The Bitcoin feature at those kiosks is run by a company called Coinme, and Coinme has agreed with state regulators to shut down its kiosk business by January 1, 2027. Coinstar’s coin counting is not affected.

This page explains what changed, what to do if you still have an unredeemed Coinme voucher, and how buying Bitcoin with cash at an America Bitcoin ATM is different.

What happened to Bitcoin at Coinstar?

On October 8, 2026, financial regulators from 34 states and territories announced a $2.5 million settlement with Coinme Inc., the Seattle company that provides Bitcoin purchases at Coinstar kiosks. Regulators cited weaknesses in Coinme’s anti-money-laundering program. As part of the settlement, Coinme agreed to end its virtual currency kiosk operations by January 1, 2027, or pay an additional $4 million penalty.

A few points worth knowing:

  • It is not every state. Reporting on the order says it covers Oregon, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and 31 other states. Regulators in Illinois and Oregon have confirmed they are part of it.
  • Coin counting stays. Coinstar’s regular coin counting and gift card services are not part of the settlement.
  • No replacement has been announced. As of this update, neither Coinstar nor Coinme has said whether another company will offer Bitcoin at those kiosks.
  • Coinme’s app is separate. The settlement covers kiosks. Coinme’s other services, including its app, are reported to be unaffected.

I still have a Coinme voucher. What should I do?

When you buy Bitcoin at a Coinstar kiosk, you get a paper voucher with a code that you redeem in a Coinme account. If you have one you haven’t redeemed, contact Coinme directly through its support site, help.coinme.com, and redeem it as soon as possible.

America Bitcoin ATM cannot see, redeem or refund Coinme vouchers or transactions. If you can’t get an answer from Coinme, you can file a complaint with your state’s financial regulator.

How an America Bitcoin ATM is different from Coinstar

Coinstar with Coinme America Bitcoin ATM
Where your Bitcoin goes You get a paper voucher, then redeem it into a Coinme account Sent straight to the wallet you scan at the kiosk; we don’t hold it
What you need Cash, then a Coinme account to redeem Cash, a phone, a government photo ID for larger purchases, and your own wallet’s receiving QR code
Selling Bitcoin for cash Not at the kiosk Some of our kiosks buy Bitcoin back for cash; call (888) 437-7582 to find one
Fee See Coinme’s pricing page A percentage of the cash you put into the kiosk, plus a flat $5 fee per transaction. The screen shows how much Bitcoin you’ll receive before you confirm.
Purchase limit Varies by state Oregon: up to $29,500 a day after verification. Illinois: up to $2,500 per transaction and $10,500 per day.

Because the Bitcoin goes directly to your own wallet, you need a wallet before you visit. If you don’t have one, our free America Bitcoin Wallet app works with any of our kiosks.

  4. Check the price and fee on screen, then insert your cash.
  5. Confirm. The Bitcoin is sent to your wallet and you get a receipt.

Before you buy: scam warning

Bitcoin sent from a kiosk cannot be reversed. Scammers often tell people to deposit cash at a Bitcoin kiosk, and they may say your usual kiosk “no longer works” and send you somewhere new. Stop if anyone:

  • says they are from the government, police, your bank, a utility or tech support and asks you to pay in Bitcoin;
  • gives you a QR code or wallet address to send money to;
  • stays on the phone with you while you’re at the kiosk;
  • promises investment returns or asks you to “protect” your money by moving it.

Only scan a wallet that belongs to you. If you think you’re being scammed, call us at (888) 437-7582 before you insert cash, and report it at ic3.gov. Read our scam prevention guide.
